The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - notched his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defence, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton missing striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having space and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs box.
